Never Drink And E-Mail

November 17th, 2008 No comments

12am and I’m slipping into unconsciousness in my nice warm bed when my Black Berry suddenly begins to vibrate wildly, jostling me back into cruel, vivid reality. I reach over and press the glowing pearl to silence the obnoxious clatter, certain that a “code red” emergency must have occurred at work, but upon inspection am greeted by the following e-mail from a co-worker:

Gentlemen ! Thanks all. We as a team(All) did what we always do ? Kick A– ! Remember ! NT Admin’s, not
team 1/2.. Game Ball goes to Bryan M. Awsome Man!!!
Also our Recon Marine(special forces) in CLT! Damm the reason fo dis email is this !!!

BRETT FAVRE IS THE GREATEST QB EVER!!!!! And if your are under 30(with a few exception) YOUR COMMENT IS NOT RECOGNIZE OR RELEVANT.

a humble rada. fo fo y’all doin’ up way up in here?!?! hizzahhhhhFavREEE

Okay, this message gets bonus points for being the most entertaining e-mail I’ve received all year, but it also serves as a prime example why one does not mix alcohol and text messaging. It’s well known that Clark (his name has been changed to protect th^H^H^H ah…what the hell. His real name is Clive) loves his tequila. He also loves him some football. When you mix the two together then throw in modern technology you’re bound to receive some glorious e-mails, especially when his team wins a Thursday night game in overtime.

…and I’m still wondering why I didn’t get the “game ball” for the work I did during last night’s release.

DVD Ripping Nightmare

November 13th, 2008 2 comments

Whenever I purchase a DVD I make a backup copy for personal use (let’s hear it for fair use laws). Unfortunately I found myself unable to successfully rip Kung Fu Panda and Star Wars: The Clone Wars using Mac The Ripper (V2.6.6 – 3.0). Seems that SW: TCW was mastered with intentionally bad sectors, while KFP appeared to suffer from similar woes.

Frustrated after making several DVD coasters, I finally resorted to powering up the PC laptop and firing up the latest version of DVDFab Platinum. Ripped and burned these two DVDs with no further issues.

Let me tell ya, DVDFab is the way you want to go if you’re limited to software options for the PC. DVDFab will both rip and burn your data in one step.

In my experience, there’s a couple of things to note when using DVDFab:

  • Selecting “DVD9″ in the Quality dropdown menu will require a dual-layer DVD disk. Instead, select “DVD5″
  • To remove subtitles, uncheck everything in the “Subpicture” column. Why they don’t identify this as “subtitles” I couldn’t tell you.
  • To save space, uncheck all unrequired selections in the “Audio” column. Every little bit saved adds more space for the movie.

That’s it. Now just sit back, pick up a good book, and wait for the burn to complete. May I suggest How To Talk Dirty And Influence People?

You Want *How* Much?

November 11th, 2008 No comments

After a couple weeks of sparce DVD offerings (not counting the recent release of Hell Ride), this week was a return to form with the release of several purchase-worthy titles. Along with Hellboy II and Kung-Fu Panda I gathered up the courage, ignored my better judgment, and picked up a copy of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. I figured it was worth throwing down a few ducats to see what the fuss was about.

*Whoah!* You want how much for this? I know this is the “special” tin case version available only at Best Buy, but com’on, $51? And what’s with the .42 cents? Who come up with that figure?

Luckily the yellow pricing sticker on the shelf indicated that this DVD was on “sale” for $20. Hmmm…how can I turn down 61% off sticker price? ;-)
