Rubik’s Cube Refurnished

May 22nd, 2009 1 comment

My cube was looking more than a little bit ratty, so I ordered a set of replacement stickers from the Rubik’s Cube store.  Apparently Rubik’s is based in Canada, so I wasn’t expecting to see these replacement stickers any time soon.  I was quite pleased when they arrived in my mailbox just four days after placing my order.  Great service!

There’s a Rubik’s Cube competition happening this Saturday at Balboa Park.  Who knows, perhaps while we’re wandering around the show Karin will buy me a new 4×4 cube? (*hint hint*)

A Few Of My Favorite Things

May 21st, 2009 3 comments

After three extremely busy days at work, my mind began to wander as I was driving home tonight.  What I started thinking about was some of the smaller things that makes life worth living; nothing earth-shattering, merely sprinkles on the ice cream.  Without getting too Zen, here are just a few of the things that sprang to mind as I drove home on automatic, absentmindedly following the well worn path home like a homing pigeon, lost in thought, barely aware of the traffic around me:

Finding money in the dryer
The smell of hot asphalt after a quick rain
Cracking open the spine of a new book
When a cashier opens a new register for you at a crowded supermarket
The goosebumps that run up your arms when you hear that certain song
The distant sound of a train’s air horn as you’re drifting off to sleep
Being the tenth caller
That “A-Ha!” moment when your subconscious solves a difficult problem
The Nails Dangerous Dreams album on vinyl
Digging into a cereal box for the prize
When the artist on stage looks directly at you
The childhood memory of the smell of coffee and cigarettes
Lacing up new running shoes for the first time
Catching all of the green lights
The soft purring rumble of my cat as she sleeps curled up against me
When the movie theater is empty except for you
Dusk at the ocean and dawn in the desert
Holding hands with the wife
The feeling of the moment right before you fall asleep
The squealing sound ice makes as you slowly grind it between your teeth
That new carpet smell

We all have tiny pleasures that act as counterbalances to the daily demands of life.  They pop up when you least expect them, acting as a sort of pressure valve slowly bleeding away stress before it all becomes just a bit too much to handle.  As a bonus, you never know when one of these moments will occur, making each appearance an unexpected gift.  And it’s these small things that we tend to often overlook until you realize how much you miss them, and how much their modest contributions help give life meaning.

My New Car

May 20th, 2009 4 comments

I’ve been thinking about purchasing a new vehicle to replace my Honda S2000.  I’m looking for something along the lines of a sporty two-seater, preferably convertible, with unique lines and great gas milage.  You know, a real head-turner.

…and I think I just found it.  Ladies and gentlemen, I give you my brand spankin’ new ride, the ZAP! Xebra:

I spotted this dead-sexy beast last week, and instantly fell in love.  This baby peaks out at 42 MPH, grinds to a crawl on any hill above a 20% grade, is so pimp it only needs three wheels, comes fully equipped with an AM/FM cassette radio, and is made in China.  Going price?  A mere $12,000.  Chump change.

Did I mention that this vehicle is classified as a motorcycle, thus avoiding any crash safety test requirements?  I’m curious how well this thing corners in the twisties…

Bad Neighbors

May 19th, 2009 4 comments

I have bad neighbors.

I never thought I’d have to admit to myself that I have bad neighbors, but I do.

Now, as bad neighbors go, mine are pretty benign, but they are becoming a blight on the neighborhood.  In their oil-stained garage they have a pool table wedged in amongst mountains of similarly stained cardboard boxes.  The requisite chopper rests in the fire lane as adults and children shout obscenities at each other.  In the parking spot next to their house skulks a truck that hasn’t been running in months.  In fact, the truck often lies scattered and strewn across the driveway, revealing a strip of decorative dead grass that is otherwise hidden underneath the rusting, tarp-covered hulk of dead steel and flat tires.

In the past couple of weeks they’ve taken to clearing out various pieces of junk from their garage and placing them in the driveway.  On any given day you can see an art easel, a dusty drum set, random tools, a dog house, a grill, various boxes and bags, etc…etc..etc….  I’m taking a wild guess here that they do this so they have room to hang out in their garage and play pool all day long.

The mind reels at what the inside of their house could possibly look like.

It’s at times like these that I’m thankful we’re part of an HoA.  Now, I know how some of you out there feel about HoA’s, but they’re there to serve a purpose, and they have quite a few tools at their disposal to resolve matters such as these.  My initial e-mail to the HoA last month was greeted quickly, professionally, and courteously, but due to the confidentiality of our communication I can’t impart what was said and/or promised.

Tonight I sent a second e-mail to the HoA, complaining that the problem has gotten worse.  I’ve made myself available to them should they need an official written complaint or a personal appearance by me.  I’ve made jokes in the past about becoming a board member, but when things like this happen it really makes the idea of effecting change from within quite tempting…

What really gets me about this situation is that I feel as if I’m the only one complaining.  I’m not living next door to these folks, but if I was you could be certain that I’d be raising holy heck about this situation.  I’m not a stickler either.  I understand and can appreciate bending rules, but when you go out of your way to become the bane of the neighborhood, you bring down the value of our homes, our community, and our living standards.  I’d feel nothing but pity and sympathy for anyone trying to sell a home right now with neighbors who obviously don’t care about anyone else but themselves.

Am I overreacting, or should I let these people continue to step all over everyone?

UPDATE 5/19/09: Steve over at the HoA sent me a nice e-mail this afternoon that makes me think that the problem is well in hand:

Thanks for your email. I cannot divulge details on what steps the association is taking, but we are addressing the situation. The other board members are aware too. I’m sure you are aware that in this day and age with all the rights everyone has that it can take time to resolve such issues. I too, probably more than you, wish I could rid myself of HOA problem children.

Steve comes off as a bit of a heel-clicker who enjoys his job a little too much…just the sort of person I’d expect to tackle tough situations such as these.  Go get ‘em, Steve!

The infamous truck that hasn't moved in months. If I lived next door to this garbage I'd be on the phone with my HoA every day of the week.

Back To The Grind…

May 18th, 2009 2 comments

It’s amazing how much work vacations are.  I feel as if I need a few days off to recover from mine ;-)

All in all we had a great time.  I went on several nice runs, Karin and I visited a few of the nearby coastal towns, we had some fantastic local food pulled straight from the sea, and happy hour began at 5pm every night.

Alas, all good things must pass.  For now it’s back to the grind.  The next big outing for me will be the Mt. Whitney run in September.  Better put in for a few days off from work for that some time this week.
