Q: What happens what a rat gnaws through the wires leading to a live circuit breaker?

A: You get one very dead rat, and one very dark data center.

That must be a very frustrating experience to go through. Hopefully GE will get the power back up and running this week and not delay it any longer. Once things get back to normal, periodic inspections for pests may help to lower the risk of this happening again. If you are called in to help in this mess, I hope you get paid or at least get a nice lunch or dinner out of it for your hard work and assistance.

Been there, done that, but not to the same scale and I feel for you. I can imagine the sick feeling of millions of dollars slipping away during this. What really sucks about extended power outages is a certain percentage of servers will not power back up even if gracefully shut down. Think your job is done but then have to scramble to replace mobo’s and power supplies. Good luck and hope all goes smoothly. Maybe you could fill the place with feral cats as a preventative measure.

Tell me about it. We’re currently encountering SQL issues, servers that will not power up, busted routers, bad local/domain logins, etc, etc, etc… (rolls eyes). Our next recourse is, indeed, setting ferrel cats free to roam under the raised floor. Heh…
