Racist KFC Commercial?

January 8th, 2010

Some oversensitive types in America are claiming that a recent commercial aired in Australia is racist.  Now, on the surface I can see the problem some people in America might have with this commercial, but since this is an Australian commercial, and I personally have no idea what their society is like down there, nor do I know anything about their culture, history, and daily living experiences, it’s unfair for me to project my American prejudices upon this twenty second television commercial and shout “racism”.

As stated in the source article:

One internet poster wrote: “I wouldn’t consider this racist. Context does matter and the fried chicken thing really is an African-American stereotype thing.”

KFC Australia said of the advert: “It is a light-hearted reference to the West Indian cricket team.

It’s funny how certain people are quick to play the race card without taking the entirety of a situation into account, often seeing things through American eyes and never understanding that America is just one part of a larger whole that has differing opinions, ideas, and values.

Some of you people out there have got to relax a bit.  Not everything you see is American-centric.  If that were the case, then everyone in the world would sit down to take a crap, there would be no such thing as beer vending machines (which, IMHO, are one of God’s greatest creations), and animals would not be sacrificed during certain high holy days.  Please, just get a grip on yourselves.  We’re not the center of the world.  The sooner you accept that fact the happier you’ll be.

Throwback Mountain Dew

January 7th, 2010

Wandering the aisles of our local union staffed grocery store this past weekend, we noticed that the Mountain Dew 12 pack boxes looked a little strange.  Instead of the normal neon and muted green color scheme they were white with an odd strip of red on the edge.  Peering down at these stacked boxes like someone studying a bit of road kill or examining a newly discovered chip in his windshield, I read the word “Throwback” in tiny letters stamped on the end of the containers.

Wow…instead of high fructose corn syrup, this limited batch of Mountain Dew was made with real sugar.  Recalling how good the sugar-infused Coke tasted during our trip to Maui last year I quickly strong-manned several cases of our accidental discovery into our cart and made a dash for the checkout line.

Let me state again how amazingly good Coke tastes when infused with sugar.  Upon first drink you’re wondering why it tastes so different.  So staggeringly seductive.  It’s only when you read the ingredients printed on the side of the can do you realize that what you thought to be some kind of ancient arcane chemical alchemy was simply…sugar.

If Coke tastes so wonderful when made with sugar, then it goes to reason that Mountain Dew must taste equally, if not more fantastic.

I couldn’t have been more wrong.

What I thought was going to be a technicolor explosion of dreamlike sensations turned out to be more like a blind date with a homely girl suffering with an inflamed goiter.

Tasting quite bland, balancing upon the sharp wavering precipice of distasteful, this nearly insipid liquid leaned precariously on just this side of foul.  I didn’t have to choke this liquid down my throat, but as I drank deeply of its blandness I couldn’t help but think of several other refreshing soft drinks that I could be ingesting in its stead.

This is the sort of drink Santa gives to bad boys and girls.

To put it bluntly, the Throwback Mountain Dew left me quite disappointed.

To save yourself from a bit of a letdown, if you’re ever given a choice between Throwback and regular Mountain Dew, chose the latter.

Holiday Transportation

January 6th, 2010

During these recent holidays the local news was encouraging people who drink not to drive while intoxicated. The talking heads urged us to take advantage of taxicabs, busses, and the local trolley system:

Screw the taxis and the trolleys.  My drunk ass would want to be in that train that freakin’ jumps over the trolleys and busses!  I mean, just look at that air time!  Is Keanu Reeves the conductor?  Yeee Hawww!

Monkey Sticker

January 5th, 2010

Karin bought me a bunch of bananas because they had this sticker adhered to their skins:

Ya know, it’s the fact that Karin thought I’d enjoy them because of the monkey sticker that made me smile.  She knows me too well.  It’s these simple things that make me realize I have the greatest wife in the world…

January 4th, 2010

Looking back on a year filled with enough fear, uncertainty and doubt to last me multiple lifetimes, I’m amazed at what took place on the periphery when I wasn’t paying attention. Putting the housing crisis, political tensions, and financial hardships aside, 2009 (and the decade) shaped up to be a rather interesting time.

And with that mindset, let me introduce to you a collection of links highlighting the good, bad, and downright ugly of 2009 and beyond. If there are any that I missed, please let me know.
