Just A Little Off The Top

November 4th, 2011 10 comments

Last week my hair stylist (can’t call ‘em “barbers” anymore) told me that their company has been bought out by the conglomerate that owns Supercuts. While shampooing my hair she confides that they’ll be changing the name of their store to “Supercuts”, the staff will be trained in the “Supercuts way”, and all employees will be taking a paycut.

Is this how the American worker is being treated nowadays?

It makes me sick to know that the person who cuts my hair, who always gets Karin and me into a chair with almost no wait, who has never given me a bad haircut, and who gets the job done quickly and efficiently is getting the short end of the stick in this buyout.

I feel a sense of loyalty to my “stylist”. We’re on a first name basis. She knows our son and always asks about him. Heck, we give her a generous yearly “bonus” every December for going above and beyond what’s required in both quality of product and personal service (she’s worth it!). She is the very example of the model employee and should be rewarded for all that she does, not punished by a corporation more intent on its bottom line than retaining talent.

After going to this stylist for over four years, I’m now considering moving on to a place that has yet to be co-opted by a faceless, soulless megacorp.

Leave or stay? Leave or stay? …I’m so torn.
