A Glimpse Into Future Past

September 22nd, 2009 3 comments

Meandering the long, dimly lit hallways of the Mayville museum on a private tour, pondering the rusting mining equipment, the dusty tomes slowing aging on sagging bookshelves, and archaic medical devices lying forever frozen under gentle florescent lighting on chipped glass shelving, I found myself impressed by the history of these amazing artifacts lovingly gathered together in this one location.  The tools of trades long since past, replaced by modern equipment and techniques was standard fare for museums such as this.  I was captivated but emotionally unmoved…until I noticed this photograph:

This photograph, when taken in as a whole, is not that remarkable.  What made it stand out in my mind was the face of one young soldier in particular.  Inching forward, hands clasped behind my back to give the observing docent the reassuring feeling that I wasn’t going to touch anything, I stared intently for several minutes at the forlorn face of this young man:

As his comrades seethed in anger, anxious to pounce on the enemy with conditioned hatred and well-practiced war cries, this was the one soldier who was not looking at the camera, but rather at a distant point well beyond the camera and our understanding.  It’s as if he’s had a long talk with himself in recent days, and he was deeply disturbed by what he heard; I can imagine him numbly accepting the terrible truth that, odds are, this was to be the final picture that he was ever going to pose for, and in the next few days he’ll be on the chaotic front lines, his unavoidable fate sealed with the dull impact of a predestined bullet, a slow choking invisible death deep in a rolling cloud of mustard gas, or in a quick blinding concussive blast of an exploding shrapnel-spitting shell.  Bound by duty and contract, heavy with the acceptance that he most probably will not be coming back this way again, his solemn expression tells me everything I need to know about the horrors of war, and how brave the World War I generation truly was.

Halloween In September

A sure sign that Halloween is on its way is the annual opening of the Spirit Halloween stores.  These seasonal stores, open only during the months of September and October, seem to pop up overnight, providing a wider selection of Halloween frights and delights than your typical big chain store.

Not being one able to resist a good freak show, Karin and I stopped by a local Spirit store that had just opened in the recent days.  Hedging our bets that, because Halloween was over six weeks away, and that the average American typically waits until the last minute to purchase their Halloween gear, the store should be relatively quiet.  Thankfully that turned out to be the case.  Everything displayed in the store was freshly out of the boxes, intact, and functional.  But give them a few weeks and I’m sure the kids will have destroyed the cool displays.

It’s amazing to think that the Spirit chain opens in over 700 locations countrywide each year.

The few kids that were in the store this past Sunday afternoon were running around, having a great time.  Several of them approached us, claiming that the masks, creepy decorations, and displays were, and I quote here, “more annoying than scary.”  I guess jaded kids are a sign of the times…

This was, by far, my favorite display.  The man inside would occasionally shake and plea to be set free “before they come back and eat me!”  Heh….

I’m a sucker for Halloween.  It’s probably my most favorite time of the year.  I think we’ll be decorating the front of the house in the next couple of weeks, stock up on candy, and hook up the porch speakers for some eerie mood music.

Michael Jackson: Time Traveler?

With all the hoopla and hullabaloo over the passing of Michael Jackson, this statue housed in the Field Museum in Chicago has been getting a lot of attention lately:

Could Michael Jackson have possessed ancient mystic, arcane knowledge which granted him power over space and time?  I contend that the undeniable, unshakable proof has been staring us in the face all this time…

Hope everyone has a great weekend.  See you Monday!

Ace Face, Is That You?

I was on my way to Fry’s to pick up The Last Starfighter on blu-ray when I happened upon this intrepid soul at a stop light:

Dig all the rearview mirrors, “MOD FLYR” license plate, and even the two reverse facing mirrors on back.  The first thing that ran though my mind when I saw this was “Ace Face!”, but alas, this American Mod is sporting a pony tail, which is most “unmodish” (did I just make up a word there?).

And so, much like Joker and his conflicting messages about war, I’m unable to figure out what this guy is trying to convey.  And no, I don’t think he has the “duality of man” on his mind, much as I’d like to think he does.

Regardless, +1 for the cool scooter.

Inflatable…What?!

At this weekend’s Celebrity Championship tour, Michael Jordan was greeted with this unusual sighting at the 17th green:

Umm….wow.  They certainly take their golf seriously up in Tahoe. I was watching this on television and wasn’t sure I saw what I thought I saw until I found it posted on youtube. I figured somebody must have posted it online, and I wasn’t disappointed when I went looking for it:

Thank God for the webbernets, preserving those important moments for all time…
