How Did He Do That?

January 10th, 2011 3 comments

Pop quiz, hotshot.

You have two minutes to guess what this person is making.  Failure to comply will result in your woodshop privileges being revoked.

Okay?  Ready, set, go!

“Oh, oh…I know!  I know!  It’s a squirrel.  No, a race car.  No, it’s a perturbed Milton Bearle.  No?  Um…a Coelacanth?  A diorama of Wimbledon?  Wait, wait…don’t tell me!  It’s a…”

“What the heck? How’d he do that?!”

Tilt Shift Friday

January 7th, 2011 1 comment

To celebrate the end of a particularly busy, frustrating and unrewarding work week, let’s all just take a moment to relax and enjoy a day in the life of Whistler Village via tilt shift photography.

Here’s hoping that I’ll see you back here next week when (hopefully) I can kick my brain out of “holiday” mode. Until then, happy Friday, everyone!

That’s Some Dizzying Camerawork There, Lou

January 3rd, 2011 4 comments

Another example of technology that I lust after.  If you’re not familiar with the GoPro line of wearable HD cameras, please visit their site and take a look at some of the amazing user-submitted videos.  These tiny cameras have fantastic resolution, and are cheap enough for anyone on a tight budget…

…and for those people who can think outside of the box, videos such as this are possible:

Very cool. It wasn’t too long ago that captures such as this was only possible with a large budget and specialized equipment.

I’m thinking this would be the perfect camera to bring up with me this during this year’s run up Mt. Whitney.  Hmmmm…

Are You Serious?!

December 29th, 2010 2 comments

City workers manage to wreck a parked vehicle with their gross incompetence:

Man, I love watching professionals at work… 8O

It’s nice to see people doing the right thing by pointing out the absurdity of the actions of these two geniuses and openly standing up for what’s right.  Here’s hoping that this video finds its way into the ruthless hands of lawyers and grim-faced insurance companies just itching for a fight.

Racist Cupcakes?

December 21st, 2010 6 comments

There’s been quite a bit of talk recently about a new Duncan Hines commercial which opponents claim is racist.

First, the ad in question:

Hmmm…this ad is supposed to be racist? I don’t get it. I see cupcakes with eyes and mouths rockin’ out to an innocuous tune, nothing more. But I guess I’m not hypersensitive to perceived indiscretions and preconceived notions about supposedly slanderous baked goods.

I think this is a prime example of people taking their own maligned view of the world and injecting that into a harmless advertisement. Much like this famous illusion, what people get out of something is what they themselves put into it. Tell me, upon first viewing that picture, did you see two people embracing or a pod of dolphins swimming?

Perhaps I’m in the minority here, but I don’t see anything racist about singing cupcakes.

What if Duncan Hines decided to use vanilla frosting instead of chocolate and had the cupcakes sing a song about monster trucks?  Would that be racist, or just a bunch of cupcakes harmonizing about a motor sport?
