This week I’ve been stuck writing emergency code and configuring SQL databases. Each day being a solid eight hours of staring at a computer screen with almost no breaks (I’m just thankful for the stockpile of Big Red I keep in my desk drawer).

This is how I felt during my drive home last night:

I much prefer the weeks at work when I feel like this:

But hey, we all have our professional ups and downs. No biggie. It all evens out in the end…

It’s 8pm and I’m sitting my cubicle, chained to my keyboard, being forced to hammer out code for an emergency investigation into a critical environment whose heap size keeps filling up under mysterious circumstances and causing processes to fail.

I’m building a tool that will monitor process heap sizes, forward them when certain criteria are met, then create dump logs of suspect running tasks as specific conditions arise.

Yes. This is how I spend some of my days.

Please accept my apologies for lack of a witty, thought provocative, or entertaining post today (yeah, like I have many of those)…and for not having time to visit my favorite blogs tonight. Here’s hoping things settle down enough for me to enjoy the upcoming weekend.

Happy Friday! I’m already looking forward to the upcoming truncated week

It’s 5pm, and the boss calls a meeting. He doesn’t does have an agenda. I swear to Gawd he just wants to hear his own voice, and I just want to go home.

He brings up the subject of remote sites, ODBC configurations, the football game from this past weekend, and asks us if we wanted to get together for happy hour.

I’m looking up at the clock and it’s fast approaching 6pm. I should have been home half an hour ago.

He then begins to talk about NIC teaming, fault tolerances, fail-over plans, and whether or not he should install a pond in his backyard. He has concerns about data center security, getting more SAN storage, can I write a batch script to auto configure a SQL value key, and then he goes on about a hangnail that’s been bothering him today.

And I’m looking up at the clock as he jabbers on about mandatory lunches, eating at your desk and chiding people for using the color printer. It’s nearing 6:30pm, and I just want to scream:

You ever have one of those days?

Was it just me or did this week seem abnormally busy? Perhaps I’m the only one?

The task of learning a new job is a bit daunting and just a bit stressful, but it’s still a sight more enjoyable than my old position. And due to my position I’m still waiting for eight different background checks to clear before I can actually log into the production environment and get some real work done. Until that time it’s study, study, study…and work as best I can in the QA world.

After so much reading, memorizing and practicing what I’ve learned, this is exactly how I felt as I walked through the door last night:

But hey, it’s finally Friday, so it’s not all bad! I’m looking forward to a long trail run this weekend, a few beers, and with my first official paycheck from my new employer it’s time to take the wife out for some quality sushi!

Have a great weekend, everyone. See you back here next week!
