On Writing

My favorite quote on writing:

Writing is easy. All you do is sit staring at a blank sheet of paper
until drops of blood form on your forehead.
    - Gene Fowler

Happy Friday. Seeing as how I have Monday off from work, I’ll see y’all back here on Tuesday. Hope you have a safe and sane 4th!

Squirm And Shudder

July 1st, 2010 2 comments

If there’s one thing people know about me, it’s that I love music. I love listening to albums, going to concerts, and surfing the web until the early morning hours searching for new bands that I’ve never heard of or listened to before.  There’s nothing like discovering fresh music from previously unknown artists who pour their hearts and souls into their work.

There’s no denying the perfect jam.  That one song that instantly speaks to you.  From opening chord to closing beat, it drives to you move, shake, and sway…and there’s just no stopping it.

Even while understanding this simple fact of life, it’s difficult to imagine what this person is listening to that’s making her twitch and flail in such a violent and random manner…at the public library:

The more I watch at this, the less “real” she looks.  It’s almost as if one of those animatronic machines from Disney’s “The Hall Of Presidents” escaped, spirited itself away in the dead of night, adopted an assumed identity in an undisclosed location, donned a wig and dress, and took up rockin’ out to Mariah Carey or Solja Boy on public terminals.

The more I think about it, the more it makes perfect sense.  The public library provides a unique opportunity for a robot to discretely recharge its depleted power cells, and nobody bothers an apparent and possibly deranged homeless person throwing fits in the reference section.

It’s Only…Wednesday?

June 30th, 2010 1 comment

Is it just me or is this week dragging by with the intensity of a ship adrift, the insightful drive of Rosemary Kennedy, and the excitement of standing in line at the DMV?

Perhaps it’s just me, but I can’t wait for the weekend.  I sure could use some much-needed sleep.  I just wish the crowd would stop mocking me every time I dozed off:

Top Shot

June 29th, 2010 No comments

Is anybody else watching Top Shot and hoping that one of these guys snaps after being eliminated and goes on a shooting rampage?

Did these contestants have to undergo psychiatric evaluation before being accepted as a contestant on this show?  I mean, if you get one guy…just one that’s a poor loser, that can’t handle being isolated, critiqued, and judged by a small group of his peers before being dismissed from the show for not measuring up to an arbitrary standard agreed upon by the alpha males of the pack, who’s to say that that person being told to go pound sand won’t pick up the nearest loaded weapon of the day and pop a few shots into the  gloating chest of the most convenient target of opportunity?

In my opinion, staging a game show revolving around deadly weapons doesn’t seem to me to be the most responsible thing to do.  Some peoples is crazy.  You can never be too sure who’s going to snap for being belittled…

…but then again, that would make for some great TV.  Who knows.  Perhaps the producers secretly wish that the worst case scenario would come to pass?

If that’s the case, then lock ‘n load Biff.  Lock ‘n load.

Weekends Are For…

June 28th, 2010 2 comments

The blur that is the weekend doesn’t linger around long enough to wipe away the stink of the work week, but doing what I could with those fleeting hours that bookmark the drudgery of Monday to Friday I managed to:

Go running at my favorite training trail.  Me and my mutated right foot had a great time running the Ellie Lane trail at Iron Mountain.

Cleaned up the house.  In this picture, Nemesis takes up a defensive position to guard herself against her sworn enemy…the vacuum cleaner.

Started and completed the collected series of Concrete.  If you haven’t read Concrete, I highly suggest that you take a peek.  It’s one of the finest examples of independent comics from back in the day when the word “independent” really meant something.

Started and am now halfway through Chuck Palahniuk’s newest novel, Tell-All.  Man, that Hazie Coogan sure is one possessive, controlling woman.  If you’re an aging movie star, for God’s sake steer clear of her.

Got in a few sessions of running through all of the Cubes.  I geeked out hard on this, but I find it relaxing.

Played a round of Arkham Horror.  My poor investigators never stood a chance againt the onslaught of ancient horrors that infested the good town.  Chalk one up for the bad guys…

Watched a few movies from the collection.  Managed to squeeze in Green Zone (Bourne IV it is not), The Book Of Eli (chock full of post-apocalyptic goodness), and Shutter Island (this movie requires multiple viewings).

And to top it all off…bath time!

And that, my friends, was my weekend.  Hope yours was just as relaxing and enjoyable!
