I’m Burnt…Phoning In This Post

June 10th, 2009 4 comments

A typical day for me:

6:50AM: Wake up, get dressed
7:45AM: Arrive at work early.  Update Sharepoint with patch data.  Resolve unpingable server issue
8:30AM: Coding begins again as I continue to undercover how jacked up Windows 2008 is
10:00AM: Attend meeting.
11:20AM: Lunch.  Picked up 28 Weeks Later on Blu-ray at Fry’s (on sale!)
12:20PM: Coding continues on Server Verification program.  Research 2008 default profiling
1:30PM: Coding continues.  Finally have 2008 automatic OS authorization working
2:00PM: Coding continues.  Woot!  Have proof of OS authorization reporting correctly to logs
2:10PM: Resolve why VM host keeps dropping from network
2:35PM: Yay!  Someone took our IP from a VM host.  Ganked it back & dropped their server
2:50PM: Coding continues.  Working on FTP log transmission & error catching subroutines
3:10PM: Repair broken .vbs script.  Charlotte and San Diego now communicating
3:45PM: Emergency request to find missing Novell data, which wasn’t missing.
3:55PM: Coding continues.  Automating 2008 Admin security profiles
4:15PM: Coding continues.  Trying valiantly to hide user account information upon log in
4:30PM: Another emergency.  Cracked into locked server whose password was forgotten
4:45PM: Throw my hands up, tear out my hair, demand my stapler back, walk out early

I’m done thinking for now.  Going home to take a shower and throw on a Babylon 5 DVD (just started season 4).  I’ll leave you with a picture of our cat because, well…just because.

…and before I forget, I want to give a shout out to Nicole from The Madlab Post for her generous review of my blog, and for placing me in amongst the top five badass blogs of 2009 (thus far).  It’s this supportive community of bloggers that makes the whole ritualized blogging process a rewarding one.  Everyone, from the readers, to the contributors, to the writers have my utmost respect.

Happy Memorial Day?

May 25th, 2009 2 comments

…or is it Merry Memorial Day?  I can’t remember.

Anyway, being a veteran myself (U.S. Air Force) I’m taking this unexpected free time to get my MAME arcade machine back up and running (thanks go out to House Of Husar for rekindling my long-smoldering classic arcade game obsession).  Its been in pieces ever since we moved into the new home, and lately I’ve been itchin’ to get in a few sessions of Robotron and Gauntlet 2.

Usually I draw the short straw at work and am forced to put in a few hours on Memorial Day, so it’s nice to have these few fleeting days off of work :-)

The R4 Revolution

April 22nd, 2009 No comments

You’ll have to forgive me if I seem a bit distracted today.  Ya see, a couple of weeks ago I ordered an R4 Revolution for my DS for strictly…*ahem*, backup purposes.

After many days of impatiently waiting the UPS guy finally delivered this gem to my front door this afternoon.  Gleefully tearing open the small shipping box, I held in my hands what felt like the keys to the kingdom.  Instead of carrying around multiple game carts I could now centralize my games to one location.  Brilliant!

So please, understand if this particular post seems a bit rushed.  I’m busy playing Elite Beat Agents, Zelda, Castlevania, and Ninjatown.  Ya know…from my backups.

One Addiction Down…

April 1st, 2009 1 comment

…many, many left to go.

Call it a side effect of the economy or a lack of dedication on my part, but I’ve finally removed World Of Warcraft from both my Mac and my PC.  It was a somber, yet empowering moment when I deleted this time sink from my life.  The way I look at it, on one hand I wiped away all of the accomplishments that at one time I thought were so important, but on the other hand I freed up quite a bit of precious hard drive space.

Now, affording the monthly rate wasn’t a burden.  I think I finally grew bored with a game that seemed more like work than fun.  I found myself wishing I had more time to do other things in life.  Squeezing in my daily blog post wasn’t cutting it for me.  I felt I needed to do more.  I think I’ll pick up writing where I left off on my main book (Abbey and Hal have been stuck in that diner long enough), and finish up another short story I’ve been working on (dig that Frank and his crazy hidden deformities).  I also need to step it up on my running in preparation for my Mt. Whitney assault in September.

And so, this is how it ends.  Not with a bang, but rather with a “meh”.  And before you even ask…no, you can’t have my stuff.

Unnecessary Quotation Marks

March 25th, 2009 4 comments

I was troubleshooting memory issues on an IBM x3650 recently when I noticed this “warning” stamped on the memory sticks:

What exactly do they mean by hot surface?   What’s the deal with the unnecessary quotation marks?  By “hot surface” do they actually mean “bacon sandwich”, “monkey granola”, or perhaps even “hoverboard switchblade”?  What’s the message they’re trying to convey?

You’d think that after investing years of development time and spending the millions of dollars required to manufacture a cutting edge DIMM stick that this particular tech manufacturer would have at least one employee on staff with a worthless college degree in English that could tell them when not to use confusing quotation marks.  Heck, should I “be concerned” when my servers start “acting up“, requiring me to “run diagnostics” to discover “where the problem lies“?

I’ll be the first one to admit that I am not the smartest man in a room stuffed full to the rafters with painfully slow savants, but…..ARGH! Will you please stop mangling the English language?
